Chennai’s charm lies in its ability to remain grounded. The city has undergone a sea change in the last two decades and has become one of the largest metropolises in India. However, with its large share of religious shrines and traditional landmarks, Chennai is still very much rooted to its age-old customs and traditions. Rarely affected by the cosmopolitan culture looming in the city, Chennaites are extremely passionate about two things – Tamil and Thalaivar. Say anything against these two and we promise you’ll regret it in an instant. Its reasonable cost of living makes Chennai one of the most favourite cities of migrants. Known for good food, great shopping experiences, tourist centres, national parks and affordable rents, Chennai comes a close third as one of the best cities to live in India. Take a one day trip around Chennai to know the benefits of living in this amazing city.

 Best Eateries

The best part about Chennai is that it treats all its residents equally. When there are some fabulous fine dining places for the elites, the city also caters to the middle class with some of the best restaurants in the country. All the vegetarian restaurants (mostly ends with Bhavan) serve sumptuous vegetarian fare worth every penny. The street food in Chennai is no less appealing –  be it sundal/ice cream/fish fry, it’s all available on the beach sides.

Start your day with Chennai’s signature filter coffee and thairusadam from one of the Bhavans. A visit to GoGo Ramen (Alwarpet), Winter Palace, InSeoul, Ma Tint Tint, Manhattan Fish Market etc is also a must!

Delightful National Parks

Interested in nature? Chennai has a world class national park situated right in the middle of the city. Guindy National Park is home to thousands of animals, birds and insects. Take a stroll around the park to get a glimpse of blackbucks, spotted deer, jackals and tortoise to name a few. The Snake Park on the other hand houses highly dangerous and poisonous reptiles such as cobras and pythons. Bird watchers will be excited to know that the park also has a large bird population. Crocodile Park is another place you can take a look at. (timings: 9 am – 5.30 pm)

Breezy Beaches

If you’ve heard of Chennai, you’ve heard of Marina Beach. Such is its popularity. Marina Beach is often overcrowded during weekends so it’s better to take a round around Elliot’s Beach also known as Besant Nagar Beach. Named after Edward Elliot, a renowned chief magistrate and superintendent of police, Madras, this beach has Velankanni Church and the Ashtalakshmi Kovil nearby. This sandy beach’s main attraction is an isolated piece of architecture situated on the shores, Broken Bridge – a perfect place for an evening walk. Many Kollywood movies have made use of this beautiful structure. Its promenade, restaurants and coffee shops make it a hotspot amongst youth.

A Shopaholic’s Haven

Who doesn’t know that Kanchivarams and Chennai go hand in hand? Take a walk around Panagal Park to stumble upon some of the best saree shops in India – Nallis, Kumarans, RMKV, Chennai silks and Sundari. If you still have time at hand go to either Ranganathan Street in T Nagar, Purasaiwalkam or Luz market. The shops not only have a variety of options but also are pocket friendly. If it’s malls you are looking for Chennai has a selection of shopping malls that feature some of the biggest brand – Express Avenue, Phoenix Market City and Spectrum Mall to name a few.
