A recent study evaluating three decades of India’s urban expansion — from 1995 to 2025 — has ranked Bangalore as the city that recorded the second-fastest growth, after Pune.  According to data, Bangalore’s population has increased by more than two times over the last 30 years, and the city has also recorded a 186% expansion in area, now totalling 498 sq. km. While the IT boom is the primary reason behind this exponential growth, mega infrastructure such as Namma Metro, the Outer Ring Road, and Bengaluru-Mysore Expressway have also played significant roles.

To accommodate the needs of an expanding city, the Karnataka government approved a ‘Greater Bengaluru Integrated Satellite Town’ project early this year. The satellite town consists of 10 villages in the Ramanagara district. As part of its decongestion plan, the government has also proposed developing areas such as Nelamangala, Devanahalli, Doddaballapura, Magadi, Hosakote, and Bidadi as satellite towns.
