On average, an urban Indian spends 10 days, 1 hour, and 55 minutes on the road each year travelling to and from work. We are only behind South Africa, which leads the list by less than three hours. Yet, when talking about the cost of daily travel, most people include only the money spent on transportation&mdash;bus\/train\/rickshaw fares, rental taxi rates, or fuel prices for private vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Well, has it ever crossed your mind that the &lsquo;actual&rsquo; cost of your daily commute could involve many more factors, not all of them monetary? Read on to discover what it means.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"Direct\">Direct costs&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To calculate the overall cost of a daily commute, let us first tackle the obvious costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuel: <\/strong>If you own a private vehicle, this includes petrol, diesel, and CNG fares. For electric vehicles, this could mean the electricity used to charge your vehicle fully. Here&rsquo;s an example. Let&rsquo;s assume diesel in Bangalore costs &#8377;100 per litre as of today. If your daily commute is 40 km, fuel charges would cost you &#8377;200 daily in a car with 20 km\/l mileage. Now, multiply this by the number of days you work in a month\/year.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"Time\">Tolls and parking: <\/strong>Most big cities have paid parking lots and sometimes multiple toll points. Calculate the amount you spend on these.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transit fares: <\/strong>For those using public transportation, this means ticket charges or fares charged by taxi\/rickshaw drivers.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"Time\">Cost of time&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the modern world, time is the most expensive commodity. However, most of us take it figuratively rather than literally. Here&rsquo;s an easy way to calculate the actual cost of time you spend commuting to work.&nbsp; First, divide your annual salary by the average number of work hours in a year. This will give you the value of each working hour. Now multiply that value by the number of hours you spend commuting in a year, and you will understand the real &lsquo;value&rsquo; of time. Let us simplify it further with an example.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your annual salary is &#8377;12 lakh.<\/li>\n<li>Let&rsquo;s assume you work eight hours a day, five days a week. Generally, a car loses around 15 to 20 per cent of its value in the first year, followed by a 10 per cent dip each year after that.
